2013 Summer Wrap-Up

Posted by on Sep 4, 2013 in Blog | 0 comments

The following is the 2013 Associate Director’s Report to the Board of Directors: Summer 2013 was the most innovative, far-reaching and challenging summer that Mar-Lu-Ridge has seen for awhile. It was very appropriate because the summer theme was Be Made New! and drew from 2 Corinthians 5:17. With a smaller staff than previous summers, Mar-Lu-Ridge reached 220 more campers than last year for a total of 970 campers. Campers were happy to be in larger programs and staff were happy to spend so much of their time in direct work with campers....

Seeking Truth

Posted by on Aug 6, 2013 in Blog, Uncategorized | 0 comments

Today campers practiced seeking truth in the appropriate places. We asked friends and role models for advice, sought out a bible passage hidden on some rocks and prayed for guidance. Dinner was fajitas cooked over a fire and s’mores for dessert, a special experience for all. Worship included coloring in a rendition of The Last Supper, which included a lot of mustaches. We found truth in a lot of small and quiet moments as well as in the craziness of a pool...

Welcome Children

Today our mini campers had a very full day. We talked about the call story of James and John and how Christ calls all of us as we are. At worship, campers wrote things they are good at on a big cross that will hang as a reminder of our strengths and blessings for the next few days. This morning campers got out to shock rock to see the view and shock each other. Lunch was a delicious Italian grilled cheese with tomato soup that disappeared quickly. The evening activity was a performance by the campers where they dressed up as their favorite...

Seek Truth

Few of us always turn to the right place when looking for answers but today we practiced seeking Christ and the redeeming truth the Good News has for us. Campers searched for bible passages on hidden rocks and Juniors and Junior Arts went on a treasure hunt during worship as experiential lessons on finding truth in the Bible. Civil War campers discussed causes of the war while touring Antietam and Arts campers had a good jam session followed by some vocal rest and visual arts. During evening devotionals, campers’ reflections on their...

They did a bible study on acceptance and today’s theme in relation to slavery. Arts and Jr Arts camps slept in the chapel and fell asleep watching the original Music Man. Junior and Junior High spent some time getting to know each other down at the challenge course. Today we spent getting to know each other and practicing the radical welcome that Jesus showed to...

Everyone got a nice fried chicken dinner and Arts campers were already doing vocal practice and dressing up in capes. Stop Hunger Now

Posted by on Jul 25, 2013 in Blog, Uncategorized | 0 comments

Experiencing a service project is a wonderful way to change yourself, grow new relationships and change the world. Confirmation campers did exactly this as they participated in a Stop Hunger Now service project where they packed 10,000 meals for families in Haiti. This proved a wonderful capstone for a week discussing how Jesus changes us, our relationships and the world with a day of zipling, serving and bonding. Junior campers decided to take on a big hike and proudly went to sleep in the barn while talking about how Christ died to free us...

Jesus Changes the World

Posted by on Jul 24, 2013 in Blog, Uncategorized | 0 comments

Confirmation camp expanded upon the theme from Monday and Tuesday with a day of discovering how youth can impact the world. Over a few minutes, campers taught their friends how to musically stack cups and all of the campers provided the percussion for Amazing Grace in a great example of how youth can influence the church and the world. SOCs worked with day campers from Amazing Grace Church in Baltimore that came up to visit Mar-Lu-Ridge. Junior campers put on campfire for their counselors using the plethora of costumes at their disposal....

Today was Christmas dinner and Christmas Eve services. We sang lots of rocking carols and ate lots of food. We decorated cookies in the afternoon and stayed cool in the pool during pool party with some very un-christmaslike weather. Solutions and Salamanders saw animals fed at a local park. Hammock campers played a fun night game and did a number of challenge courses. Junior campers did some caroling and are likely going to be the most excited for the candy in their shoes in the morning. Adventure camp woke up at Ohiopyle State Park and went...

Tuesday campers got to ask their theological questions of each other, their counselors and the pastor of the week, Matt Furhman. The discussions were wonderful, fruitful and many of the topics will be returned to over the course of the week. We’ve been having a lot of fun as well, Solutions and Salamanders campers have done a lot of water based experiments including a glowing drinkable solution and a water bottle with holes in it that doesn’t leak. Adventure camp made their way down to the lodge and hammock camp set up hammocks by the campfire smile this evening. We look forward to a great week of...
