Truth Seekers

Truth as made available to us in the Bible was the theme of today. Mini campers searched for hidden words to make a complete bible verse and many other campers did a similar activity. Night owls are currently having snack after a Parent Trap themed skit and song time and will be up for a bit more tonight. Captive Free rocked a concert with all of the campers and everyone really had a great time seeing the young adult leaders up on stage. Mid Drift and Jr Horseback did get a pool time in despite the rain and sought out some fun there...

As We Are

Today campers talked about the call story of James and John and the immediacy of their call. Everyone heard some calls at Scales and Tales as we learned about raptors, owls and snakes but the Night Owls made many more with an evening game of Werewolf. Jr Horseback enjoyed their time riding and they along with Mid-Drift got down to the challenge course for some team building. Minis took a hike out to Shock Rock and then we all enjoyed our Italian grilled cheeses with alphabet tomato soup. Captive Free members helped lead rocking QJN63 in the...

Be Made New!

Posted by on Jul 7, 2013 in Blog | 0 comments

Our wonderful week of camp began with some renewing rain at dinner time. As the fauna breathed in the refreshing drizzle, campers began the process of being renewed with a remembrance of baptism. In worship, we all painted crosses on our neighbors’ foreheads as a reminder of how God first makes us new. Minis, Mid-Drift and Horseback all went to sleep after that while Night Owls played a game in the dark, the beginning of a week-long...

Campers wrapped up their weeks of Mar-Lu-Ridge today with some high adventure. Wild and Crazy campers had some fun games in the pool while junior high went rock climbing. Senior High/SITs rode the zipline and horseback campers finally got to canter. In our week of fun and Christian community we have all been made new, revolutionized who we are thanks to a renewed relationship with...

Chains and Rocks

The Fourth of July was truly an extravaganza! We had apple pie and ice cream after some field games and a pool party. Chalk powder was thrown on counselors and Sr High/SITs and food was thrown on the fire at our cookout dinner. Being free to have fun and to celebrate our nation is important, but is not the most important freedom we learned about today. Campers celebrated American independence while talking about how Jesus paid our sinful debt so that we are free to serve others. This does not mean we are without sin, but instead that our sin...

Loving Like Christ

Posted by on Jul 3, 2013 in Blog, Uncategorized | 0 comments

Christ set a high standard for love. Campers learned about what Christ did and said, especially about who to love and how Jesus did that. Sr High and SITs had a worship that challenged them to love their enemies and to pray for them. Then they had a dance party. Wild and Crazy Camp had a balloon battle and had a similar discussion. Junior High groups enjoyed a relaxing hike full of discussions down to Area 3 where they are spending the night sleeping in the barn. Horseback campers got to do more advanced work then yesterday including trotting...

Today campers were really Being All They Could Be and learning and discussing how Jesus welcomes them whoever they are. Horseback campers got their skills tested down at the stables and Senior High had a great worship down by the pond. Wild and Crazy Camp is truly living up to their name, they ate without their hands twice today and even participated in an ice cream/sprinkle relay that required hosing off afterwards. Junior High campers wore masks they made to worship and sang and talked about the things we cover up from each other. We...

Camp Beginnings

Sunday marked the beginning of another great week of camp with Senior High, SITs, Junior High and Wild & Crazy Camp. The afternoon started well with lots of games and Wild and Crazy Camp chose code names for the week. Worship for the evening included an activity where we wrote our worries about the week on slips of paper and then watched them disappear in flame at the foot of the cross. Pr Christine Parker talked with us about how we are all chosen, loved and renewed and then we went to bed. Sr High and SITs got in a hike to Shock Rock...

A New Life

Campers left the mountain today to spread the good news, we have been made new through Christ. Campers also put on their own versions of the Nabisco Clemens Epilogue and made s’mores. Day campers enjoyed a hayride while Fishing campers caught some fish and practiced some patience. Junior high camper had some moving farewells and swimming campers invented their own strokes. Overall, a great camp day and a day in the new life that Christ has given...

Freedom

Today we discussed the freedom that Christ has made available to us through his death on the cross. Junior high campers took that freedom and did service projects after a morning at the zipline. Swimming campers attempted to walk on water and discussed faith and doubt. Fishing campers freed the fish they caught while family camp and the mobile Mar Lu’s were free from boredom with a day of nature hikes and visits to parks. Finally at the end of the day, we were all free to praise God in an upbeat and dance-filled worship in the...

Agape

Today we spent practicing the love that Christ showed for us, or at least doing our best at it. Junior High campers went to a local church and did some grounds work and all campers told a neighbor a way that God loves them in worship. Our aptly named Agape Hall served as a focus for bible studies on the creative, redemptive and overflowing love that we are called to as Christians. This is a radical idea but it is often the youngest among us who best take to the message. To have faith and to love like a child are blessings that campers spent...

Today the people at Mar-Lu-Ridge really began to get to know each other and to welcome one another to the week of camp. Swimming camp got acquainted with the water; junior high groups got to know the challenge course; fishing camp met the pond; all campers saw some nature up close at Scales and Tales. Those that wanted to even got to pet a snake before the ice cream social. From our octogenarian adult campers to the youngest six-year-old, the people visiting the Ridge have begun to call the mountain...

A New Creation

This afternoon Mar-Lu-Ridge welcomed many new and old faces all began the work of being remade. Campers got to know group members over games including a hunt for hidden counselors and a water relay. The entertainment for the evening was the first installment of the week-long series Tips Ahoy: The Nabisco Clemens Story. The saga follows a child who wants to become a busboy upon hearing the advice of a talking calzone. The second episode is much anticipated. At worship, the sun fell over Harper’s Ferry as campers painted crosses on their...

Be Free

Campers freed themselves of a number of things today. Wandering Work traded their paddles for pedals and a pool party with the Jr High campers. Jr High was earlier freed of gravity for a brief time on the zipline. Day Camp was quite freed of germs after finding some animal bones in the woods and then washing quite thoroughly. Most importantly, we are all freed from sin thanks to Jesus Christ and that was the topic of today’s bible studies. One camp bible study involved spending some time tied together at a Mobile Mar Lu Program in...

Camp Eve

The last night of staff training was marked by a prayer vigil in the barn in Area 3. Staff members prayed, wrote about their hopes for the summer and pondered being Made New. Both at sunrise and sunset the staff prepared for a great summer and in between Mar-Lu-Ridge was made new – or at least a little cleaner. Tonight, we rest and prepare as a community to be made a little more whole with the arrival of the first campers...

This week has been an exciting one full of Mar-Lu-Ridge fun! This week Rick Hill joined us for a concert and taught us a lot of new (old) camp songs including one about a crazy cat. A banjo, hammer dulcimer, guitar, hands, feet and voices were all used by Rick and campers to have a great time Tuesday night. We have all been called to be fishers of men but this week we are joined by some campers that have been called to be fishers of fish! The Junior High fishing program fished on the Potomac both late last night and this morning. In addition...
